Sarah Ferguson Stripped of Freedom of City of York Over Epstein Ties

The City of York council voted unanimously on March 26 to strip Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, of the Freedom of the City, a ceremonial title she had held since the 1980s, citing her connections to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.¹

The debate lasted less than 10 minutes before councillors reached a unanimous decision, according to ITV News.¹ The Freedom of the City had been bestowed on Ferguson as a gift from the city when she married Prince Andrew, Duke of York, in 1986.

A ‘Steadfast, Generous and Supreme Friend’

The council’s decision was driven in part by revelations about the depth of Ferguson’s relationship with Epstein. Ferguson had publicly described Epstein as a “steadfast, generous and supreme friend” in a private email sent in April 2011, approximately three years after his 2008 conviction for soliciting a minor in Florida.²

That characterization, which resurfaced in documents released under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, drew widespread criticism and renewed scrutiny of Ferguson’s ties to Epstein and his circle. The 2008 conviction resulted in Epstein serving 13 months in a county jail under a controversial plea deal that allowed him work release privileges.

Ferguson’s connection to Epstein was facilitated through Prince Andrew, who maintained a well-documented friendship with the financier. Andrew himself has faced sustained public pressure over his association with Epstein, including allegations that have led to his effective withdrawal from public life.

Disappearance From Public Life

Ferguson has not been seen publicly since December 2025, according to Fox News.² Her absence from public engagements has coincided with the accelerating release of Epstein-related documents that have drawn attention to her and other members of the British establishment.

Six companies linked to Ferguson have been shut down in recent months, though the precise reasons for the closures have not been publicly detailed.² Ferguson’s representatives have not commented on the company closures or her withdrawal from public appearances.

The City of York’s decision to revoke the title adds to the growing list of institutional consequences flowing from the Epstein file releases. Other British institutions have also taken action in response to the revelations, including Princess Eugenie’s departure from an anti-slavery charity patronage over her family’s Epstein connections.

Broader Fallout in the UK

The unanimous vote reflected a broader shift in British public opinion as Epstein-related documents continue to implicate prominent UK figures. Members of Parliament have called for a formal inquiry into Epstein’s connections to British institutions, and the Metropolitan Police have faced pressure to pursue investigations based on newly released evidence.

York city councillors said the decision was necessary to protect the integrity of the city’s honors. The Freedom of the City is a largely ceremonial title but carries symbolic significance as a mark of civic recognition and esteem.

Ferguson has not publicly responded to the council’s vote.
