Jeffrey Epstein
Convicted sex offender and financier
American financier and convicted sex offender who was charged in 2019 with federally running a sex-trafficking operation involving minors. He died in federal custody on August 10, 2019, a death the New York City medical examiner ruled a suicide. His case led to the Epstein Files Transparency Act and the release of roughly 3.5 million pages of federal records.
Jeffrey Epstein in the Epstein Files — By the Numbers
Topics Covered
Jeffrey Edward Epstein was an American financier and convicted sex offender who built and operated a trafficking network spanning decades, continents, and some of the most powerful institutions in the world. He was found dead in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City on August 10, 2019, at age 66, while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges. The New York City medical examiner ruled his death a suicide by hanging.
His case — and the network of enablers, associates, and institutions that surrounded him — became one of the most consequential criminal investigations of the 21st century, ultimately leading to the passage of the Epstein Transparency Act in November 2025 and the release of over 3.5 million pages of federal documents.
Early Life and the Mystery of His Credentials
Epstein was born on January 20, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up in the Coney Island neighborhood of Sea Gate. He attended Lafayette High School, where teachers described him as intelligent but undisciplined. He enrolled at Cooper Union and later New York University but did not complete a degree at either institution.
Despite lacking a college degree, Epstein obtained a teaching position at the Dalton School, a prestigious Manhattan private school, where he taught calculus and physics in the mid-1970s. Accounts of the exact timing differ: a 2002 New York Magazine profile placed his start in 1973, while the school’s yearbooks list him as a teacher beginning in the 1974–75 academic year, when he was 21. He was dismissed in 1976. The school’s headmaster during much of this period was Donald Barr, father of future U.S. Attorney General William Barr; Barr announced his resignation in early 1974, and it is not established that he personally hired Epstein. How a young man without a college degree secured a position at one of New York’s most elite private schools has never been fully explained.
Bear Stearns and Early Finance Career
In 1976, Epstein left Dalton for a position at Bear Stearns, the investment bank. He started as a junior assistant and rose to become a limited partner around 1980. Former colleagues described him as charming and adept at cultivating wealthy clients, but the specifics of his work at the firm remain opaque. He left Bear Stearns in 1981, after an internal investigation, under circumstances that have been described in varying ways.
Epstein later founded his own financial management firm, J. Epstein & Company (established in 1988), which he renamed the Financial Trust Company in 1996 and based in the U.S. Virgin Islands. He claimed to manage money exclusively for clients with a net worth of more than $1 billion, though others have expressed skepticism about that description. The only publicly identified client of his firm was Leslie Wexner, the founder of L Brands; reporting has since indicated his businesses received fees from at least one other billionaire as well.
The Wexner Relationship
The relationship between Epstein and Wexner is one of the most consequential — and least explained — in the case. They became close in the mid-to-late 1980s, reportedly introduced through mutual connections. In 1991, Wexner granted Epstein full power of attorney over his affairs, a degree of control almost unheard of in wealth management.
In 1998, Epstein took control of the Manhattan townhouse at 9 East 71st Street — one of the largest single-family residences in New York City — which Wexner had owned. Accounts of the transaction differ: New York property records indicate Epstein acquired the property from a Wexner-linked entity for about $20 million, and Wexner has told Congress that Epstein purchased it from him rather than receiving it as a gift; the city assessed its value at roughly $56 million in 2019. According to victim testimony, the townhouse later became a primary site where abuse took place.
Wexner has said he severed ties with Epstein around 2007 and that Epstein had “misappropriated vast sums” from him. The full scope of the financial relationship has never been independently audited or fully disclosed.
The Scale of the Network
Epstein maintained properties across the globe, each of which featured in victim accounts and investigative records:
- New York City: The 9 East 71st Street townhouse, a seven-story mansion on the Upper East Side and one of the largest single-family residences in the city. Multiple victims described being assaulted there.
- Palm Beach, Florida: A waterfront estate on El Brillo Way, purchased in 1990. The Palm Beach police investigation that began in 2005 focused on abuse at this property. Officers reported finding hidden cameras, photographs, and massage tables.
- New Mexico: Zorro Ranch, a large property near Stanley, New Mexico, which Epstein acquired in 1993. Former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson was among those named in connection with Epstein’s network, though he denied any wrongdoing before his death in 2023.
- Paris, France: An apartment on Avenue Foch. Jean-Luc Brunel, the French modeling agent who was charged with rape of minors and found dead in his Paris jail cell in February 2022, was tied to Epstein’s network.
- Little St. James, U.S. Virgin Islands: Epstein’s private island, which he purchased in 1998 for about $8 million. The roughly 72-acre property featured a main residence, guest houses, and other structures. Victims described being unable to leave the island freely.
- Great St. James, U.S. Virgin Islands: An adjacent island Epstein purchased in 2016 for a reported sum of roughly $18 million or more. Construction was underway at the time of his arrest.
His aircraft — most notably a Boeing 727 known publicly as the “Lolita Express” — featured prominently in accounts of how he moved between his properties. Flight logs entered into litigation listed many passengers over more than a decade.

The Trafficking Operation
According to court filings, victim testimony, and law enforcement records, Epstein’s trafficking operation followed a consistent pattern. Young women and girls — many from economically vulnerable backgrounds — were recruited through a pyramid scheme of referrals. Initial contact often came through offers of employment, frequently as a “masseuse.”
Ghislaine Maxwell played a central role in recruiting and grooming victims, a finding reflected in her 2021 federal conviction. The 2008 non-prosecution agreement negotiated by Alexander Acosta named several alleged co-conspirators — including Sarah Kellen, Adriana Ross, Lesley Groff, and Nadia Marcinkova — who were granted immunity from federal prosecution.
Victims described a consistent escalation: initial payments for massages that progressed to sexual abuse. Many victims were 14 to 16 years old. They were paid in cash — typically $200 to $300 per visit — and incentivized to recruit other girls, creating a self-perpetuating network. The Palm Beach police investigation alone identified at least 36 underage victims.
Evidence collected at Epstein’s properties included thousands of photographs — some sexually explicit and featuring minors — CDs labeled with names and dates, hidden cameras, and massage tables in nearly every room. The FBI’s 2019 raid on the Manhattan townhouse recovered additional safes containing CDs, diamonds, cash, and a fake passport with Epstein’s photograph under a different name listing a Saudi Arabia address.
The 2005-2008 Florida Investigation and Plea Deal
The criminal investigation began in March 2005, when the mother of a 14-year-old girl in Palm Beach contacted police. The Palm Beach Police Department, led by Chief Michael Reiter and Detective Joe Recarey, conducted an extensive investigation that identified dozens of victims and gathered substantial physical evidence.
Chief Reiter referred the case to the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s office after concluding that then-Palm Beach County State Attorney Barry Krischer was not pursuing the case aggressively enough. A federal grand jury investigation followed.
Although federal prosecutors had prepared a draft indictment, Alexander Acosta, then U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, negotiated a non-prosecution agreement (NPA) with Epstein’s legal team, which included Alan Dershowitz and other prominent attorneys.
Under the deal, finalized in 2008, Epstein pleaded guilty to two state charges: one count of solicitation of prostitution and one count of procuring a person under 18 for prostitution. He was sentenced to 18 months in jail and registered as a sex offender. He served about 13 months before his release in 2009, during much of which he was granted work release to an office outside the jail. Under the non-prosecution agreement, named and unnamed potential co-conspirators were granted immunity from federal prosecution.
The victims were not notified of the plea agreement, a violation that U.S. District Judge Kenneth Marra ruled in February 2019 was a breach of the Crime Victims’ Rights Act.
A 2019 Daily Beast report, citing an anonymous source, claimed that Acosta had told members of Trump’s transition team he was advised to back off because Epstein “belonged to intelligence.” The account has not been independently confirmed; Acosta declined to confirm it publicly, and a Justice Department review later reported that he denied under oath having knowledge that Epstein was an intelligence asset.
The 2019 Federal Arrest
On July 6, 2019, Epstein was arrested at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey upon returning from Paris on his private jet. He was charged by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York with sex trafficking of minors and conspiracy to commit sex trafficking. The indictment covered conduct from at least 2002 through 2005 in New York and Florida.
During a bail hearing on July 18, 2019, prosecutors argued Epstein was a flight risk and a danger to the community, citing his wealth, private aircraft, and foreign passport. Judge Richard Berman denied bail.
On July 23, 2019, Epstein was found semi-conscious in his cell with marks on his neck. He was placed on suicide watch but was removed from it roughly six days later — a decision that would come under intense scrutiny.
Death in Custody
On the morning of August 10, 2019, Epstein was found unresponsive in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner, led by Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Barbara Sampson, ruled the death a suicide by hanging.
The circumstances surrounding his death fueled widespread suspicion. Two guards assigned to monitor his unit — Tova Noel and Michael Thomas — were accused of having fallen asleep for hours and falsifying records to indicate they had conducted required rounds. They were charged in November 2019; the case was later resolved through a deferred prosecution agreement. Cameras in front of his cell malfunctioned that night, and other footage was reported to be unusable. He had been removed from suicide watch days before his death, following an earlier incident.
Michael Baden, a forensic pathologist hired by Epstein’s brother Mark, publicly stated that some injuries were more consistent with homicidal strangulation than suicide. The medical examiner stood by the suicide ruling.
The death eliminated the possibility of a criminal trial and the public testimony it would have produced. Multiple investigations were underway at the time, and prosecutors had been developing cases that extended well beyond Epstein himself.
The Contacts Book

Epstein’s personal contacts book, often referred to as his “black book,” contained roughly 1,500 names with contact information. A copy was taken by Epstein’s former house manager, Alfredo Rodriguez, who later tried to sell it to an undercover FBI agent in a 2009 sting; he pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice in 2011, was sentenced to 18 months in prison, and died in 2015. The book was published publicly in 2015 and was referenced in the Giuffre v. Maxwell litigation.
Names in the book included world leaders, corporate executives, scientists, academics, celebrities, and members of European royal families. A name appearing in the book does not, on its own, indicate knowledge of or participation in criminal activity — many entries appear to be social and professional contacts. Some entries were marked by Rodriguez, who characterized certain names as those of potential witnesses or participants.
Aftermath and the Epstein Transparency Act
Epstein’s death did not end the legal reckoning. Ghislaine Maxwell was arrested in July 2020 and convicted in December 2021 on five of six counts related to sex trafficking. She was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Jean-Luc Brunel, the French modeling agent tied to Epstein’s network, was arrested in Paris in December 2020 on charges of rape of minors and sexual harassment. He was found dead in his cell in February 2022, in what French authorities ruled a suicide.
In January 2024, thousands of pages of documents from the Giuffre v. Maxwell civil case were unsealed in batches under an order by U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska, naming roughly 150 Epstein associates, many of whom had previously been identified only by pseudonyms. Some redactions protecting victims and uninvolved third parties were preserved.
The Epstein Files Transparency Act passed the House by a vote of 427-1 on November 18, 2025, and was approved by the Senate by unanimous consent; it was signed into law on November 19, 2025. It mandated the release of Justice Department records relating to Epstein. The DOJ subsequently released roughly 3.5 million pages of documents, including about 180,000 images and 2,000 videos — though the completeness and redaction levels of those releases remain subjects of ongoing congressional oversight.
The Central Question
Epstein’s operation did not function in isolation. It required recruiters, pilots, household staff, legal representation, financial infrastructure, and — according to victims — a steady supply of powerful men who participated in or turned a blind eye to the abuse. The central, unresolved question of the Epstein case is not about one man. It is about how a convicted sex offender, after receiving what a federal judge called an unlawfully lenient plea deal, continued to move freely among the world’s most powerful people — and what those people knew, when they knew it, and what they did or failed to do with that knowledge.
The Epstein Transparency Act was designed to answer those questions. Whether the released documents will fully do so remains a matter of active public debate, ongoing litigation, and congressional investigation.
