Edward Boyden

Edward S. Boyden is an American neuroscientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he holds the Y. Eva Tan Professorship in Neurotechnology and is a member of the McGovern Institute for Brain Research. He is best known for helping to pioneer optogenetics — a technique that uses light-activated proteins to control neurons — and for developing expansion microscopy, a method that physically enlarges biological samples so they can be imaged at high resolution with conventional microscopes.
