Robert Gabriel Mugabe led Zimbabwe for nearly four decades, as Prime Minister from 1980 and President from 1987 until 2017. He appears in the Epstein files only indirectly — discussed in a 2015 Epstein email exchange and named in an unverified 2017 FBI source claim — with no documented meeting or interaction between the two men. He died in 2019.
Robert Gabriel Mugabe served as Zimbabwe’s Prime Minister from 1980 and as President from 1987 until his resignation in November 2017, leading the country for nearly four decades after independence from British colonial rule. He died on 6 September 2019.
Mugabe’s name appears in the Epstein files only in an indirect and second-hand manner. According to reporting by BBC News, republished by Zimbabwe’s The Standard, a 2015 email exchange between Epstein and the Japanese technologist Joichi “Joi” Ito raised the idea of approaching Mugabe about a new currency for Zimbabwe amid the collapse of the Zimbabwean dollar. When Ito asked whether Epstein was close to Mugabe, Epstein replied: “No, but can easily get his attention, zimbabwe would be a great petrie dish, its also supposed to be beautiful.” The Standard and The South African both report that the exchange indicates no existing relationship between the two men, and neither source documents that Epstein and Mugabe ever met or interacted.
The Standard and The South African also report that an FBI document dated 2017 recorded a claim, attributed to an unverified confidential human source, that Epstein acted as a “wealth manager” for Russian President Vladimir Putin and provided a similar service to Mugabe. Both outlets stress that this claim was not independently verified. The Standard further notes that a former Mugabe ally told the BBC that inaccuracies in the material suggested the information about Mugabe was fabricated.
Is Robert Mugabe in the Epstein files?
Only indirectly. Mugabe is mentioned in the Epstein files, but the references are second-hand: he is discussed in a 2015 Epstein email exchange with Joi Ito, and he is named in an unverified 2017 FBI source claim about wealth management. According to the sources reviewed here, there is no documented evidence that Epstein and Mugabe ever met, communicated directly, or did business together — Epstein himself said in the email that he was not close to Mugabe.
