Robert Garcia is a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives, serving California’s 42nd congressional district since January 3, 2023. He previously served as mayor of Long Beach, California, from 2014 to 2022, and assumed the role of Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on June 24, 2025, succeeding Stephen Lynch. In that position he is the committee’s top Democrat.

As Ranking Member, Garcia has been a leading figure in the Democratic effort to compel the release of records related to Jeffrey Epstein. Raw Story, in a March 15, 2026 report, described him as the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, “which is conducting an active investigation into Epstein and potential co-conspirators,” and reported that he has pressed the Department of Justice to comply with the Epstein Files Transparency Act. The Mirror US, also on March 15, 2026, characterized Garcia as “one of the chief backers of efforts to force the Justice Department to adhere to its congressional mandate” to release the Epstein files.

Garcia has publicly criticized the Justice Department’s handling of the documents and directed his criticism at Attorney General Pam Bondi. According to Raw Story, he said Bondi “needs to understand that she has an enormous amount of liability here as the attorney general, and as someone that’s leading this cover-up,” adding that “she will be held accountable, and our goal is to hold the president accountable.” Both Raw Story and The Mirror US quoted his comparison to the Watergate scandal, in which he said the matter is “infinitely worse than the Watergate cover-up as we know it.”

April–May 2026: Contempt, a Field Hearing, and a “New Phase”

After President Trump fired Bondi in April 2026 but she continued to resist the committee’s subpoena, Garcia escalated. On April 29, 2026, he and all of the committee’s Democrats filed a resolution to hold Bondi in civil contempt of Congress after she skipped a scheduled deposition; Republicans announced a date for her appearance within the hour, and she ultimately sat for a transcribed interview on May 29.

On May 12, 2026, Garcia led Oversight Democrats and Florida Democrats in a field hearing in West Palm Beach, where Epstein survivors testified within about three miles of the mansion where many were abused. He paired the hearing with an interim staff report, “The Price of Non-Prosecution,” which argued that the lenient 2008 deal negotiated by then-U.S. Attorney Alexander Acosta had allowed Epstein to expand his operation into an international trafficking network. Garcia said Democrats were entering “a new phase of the Epstein investigation,” one centered on survivors and on the failures that let Epstein operate for years.

Is Robert Garcia in the Epstein files?

Based on the sources reviewed for this profile, Robert Garcia is not identified as a person named in the Epstein files. He appears in connection with this subject in his official capacity as a lawmaker and investigator: as Ranking Member of the House Oversight Committee, he is among those leading the congressional push to force the Department of Justice to release the files under the Epstein Files Transparency Act. Both Raw Story and The Mirror US (March 15, 2026) describe him as a lawmaker pushing for the documents’ release, not as an individual named within them. No source reviewed here links Garcia to Epstein in any other capacity.
